Are the Compliance Contact details for your organisation up to date?

Compliance Contacts are the persons officially registered with government agencies as representing your organisation. These people can deal with the agencies and the agencies will contact them for any offical matters. Organisations here refers to Churches and Non-Profits/For Purpose Organisations.

When was the last time you, or your committee member, checked these details?

Who are the Compliance Contacts registered for your organisation:

    • Public Officer?
    • Secretary?
    • Board member?
    • ATO contact?
    • ASIC contact?

Where are the Minutes from the meetings appointing each person?

Do you have a current copy of the list from the ABR (Australian Business Register)?

If the organisation is, or includes a company, as do most charities and even some churches have this legal structure, such as incorporated association, company limited by guarantee, then the Board members generally require a Director ID (that is a separate and personal registration which the Board must check and ensure compliance).

The leadership and officers of Churches and NFP organisations change regularly, especially around the AGM time. The updating of contact details with regulatory organisations is often overlooked or people are unaware that it is a government requirement to keep the contact details up to date.

We have encountered many organisations which have not maintained these records and so find that the incumbent office holders cannot deal with the agencies. It then takes them a lot of time, and sometimes expense, to bring the files up-to-date. At the same time they call on the Benkorp Team for assistance.

Benkorp is here to help you update authorised contacts with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Australian Business Register (ABR) for Not-for-Profit (NFP) organisations including churches.

Contact records are meant to be updated within 28 days of the org becoming aware of changes. Awareness happens when there is minute or motion by a responsible committee or the board.

Not updating your contact details means that you won’t be able to:

    • Discuss any issues relating to your church or NFP with the ATO or ABR;
    • Set up the connection between the ATO and your Xero software so you can lodge Single Touch Payroll (STP) and Business Activity Statements (BAS) with the ATO;
    • Amend BASs previously lodged;
    • Set up online access for your church or organisation

Why update your ATO/ABN details?

Updating your ABN details is required to ensure:

    • the proper people have the correct permissions to act on behalf of the  organisation; This includes contact by the organisation to the agency as well as the agency contacting the organisation
    • government agencies have up-to-date information – which they, or other agencies,  can use to contact organisations or provide targeted assistance in times of emergencies; and
    • you’re ready for new government requirements or services when they come online.

Benkorp is here to help you update authorised contacts with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Australian Business Register (ABR) for Not-for-Profit (NFP) organisations including churches.
